David McCullough, one of America’s famous and cherished writers of history, says that, so as to understand the topic you’re writing about, you need to do a couple of things: you want to read everything they wrote, be knowledgeable about the novels they read, visit the actual locations where significant events in their lives took place, and also look at any photos you’ll be able to get your hands on. This process permits you to get to know them in their own words, and understanding what they read provides you with a window into the material that affected them the minds that they have been persuaded by. You want to discover the forgotten facts: what they had in their bedroom, say, or the things they stored in their hope chest.
All these days, travel via plane is now something commonplace and routine. But just over a hundred decades ago, flying as we understand it today was in its first pioneering stages when Wilbur and Orville Wright invented the first plane. And, interestingly, if they successfully flew a plane over the ground for the very first time, no one actually paid attention to it. People at the time had decided that flight was out of this question–it was hopeless, something mankind just could not do.
However, what about these boys who did it? What was their story?
Although they figured out physics and engineering dilemmas in their pursuit, they weren’t trained in either of those areas. In a speech to the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston on November 13, 2015, McCullough provided this food for thought:
“It’s worth considering that both of these brothers, these two amazing Americans who solved the most difficult technical difficulty…had no scientific or technical training whatsoever. They have been steeped in and raised on and educated in the liberal arts. Period. They finished high school, let alone went to school. But they grew up in an atmosphere in which interest was stimulated in the time they had been old enough to speak.”
Their father was a churchman, a minister, really, and also their childhood home was filled with books. They had been exposed to a number of the classics and were raised and taught the importance of being frank, the value of hard work, to live with meaning and purpose, and to be humble. In short, they were raised to be people who exhibited character and integrity.
Neither of the brothers married, and they were known around town for their job in the bike business. Their fascination with airplanes and flying was something that they had to work on once their official work day was finished, and they were never given or sponsored any money to help them afford the materials they had to construct their airplane models. Everything they got was from the money they gleaned from their small shop.
As they continued to work at it and make modifications, they would test their newest improvements with a single caveat: they did not ever fly together. They knew, when they moved to provide the newest attempt a whirl, that fatality was always a chance. Because of that, one of them would always remain on earth. This way, in the event of a catastrophe, their work would continue on through the surviving brother.
On December 17, 1903, they flew, successfully, for the very first time. Later that day, they sent a telegram to their father that read:”Success four flights thursday morning all against twenty one mile wind from level with engine power alone average speed through air thirty one miles longest 57 seconds inform Press home Christmas.” Interestingly, though an incredible breakthrough in human history had just happened, they didn’t get much care for this. People were not fascinated by what they were doing. Reporters didn’t come to bring it in or see what was happening. In 1908, Wilbur went to France and flew for a little audience of approximately 100 individuals. Shortly, plenty of people were coming to see this marvel, and it had been after the Europeans got excited about what was going on their accomplishment was realized at large.
One other interesting piece of the story? Wilbur had intended on attending Yale to obtain an education. But he had been struck in the mouth with a hockey stick when he was 18. When that happened, it knocked out all his teeth. Instead of going to school, he ended up holing up at home and escaping into books. As a consequence of these conditions, the brothers ended up chasing this other life route, something which ultimately ended up paving the way for traveling as we understand it now.
In our time, traveling as a grownup has never been simpler. But with no progress in technology and science, such as the Wright brothers’ work, as an instance, travel as we know it now would not be possible.
