“I understand war as couple of other living males now know it, and absolutely nothing to me is more revolting. Once war is required on us, there’s no other option than to apply every available means to bring it to a swift end.” (Douglas MacArthur).
Stated a man who spent more than 50 years in the military, receiving various awards for his courage, leadership, and service. While lots of people respected, enjoyed, and admired him, others (especially Pres. Harry Truman) thought Douglas MacArthur was a disgrace. Despite individual viewpoint, nevertheless, any individual would be hard-pressed to negate MacArthur’s commitment to nation and the conservation of flexibility.
He was born in January 1880, the last child of Arthur and Mary MacArthur. His father combated in the Civil War on the Union side, and was later granted a Medal of Honor for his service. Surprisingly, two of his wife’s bros fought on the opposing side throughout the war and wouldn’t attend their sibling’s wedding event as a result.
Of his boyhood, MacArthur remembered: “I learned to ride and shoot even before I could check out or write– indeed, nearly before I might stroll and talk.” And apparently his dad discovered these interests as well, because he commented, “I believe there is the material of a soldier in that young boy.” Following his youth, MacArthur participated in West Point, finishing in 1903 at the top of the pack of 93 graduating students. Acquiring a strong military tradition, he followed in his daddy’s steps by fighting in WWI. Upon returning, he took the task of Superintendent at West Point, and went to work changing up the school’s scholastic program. Under his instructions, West Point provided a 4-year program once again, and expanded the curriculum to include courses that would give cadets an education that went beyond military training.
While he plainly valued his work in the military, his love of being a daddy won the loves of his heart. He said: “By occupation I am a soldier and take pride in that truth, however I am prouder, definitely prouder to be a daddy. It is my hope that myson when I am gone will remember me, not from battle, however in the home, duplicating with him our simple day-to-day prayer, ‘Our daddy, Who art in Heaven.'”.
Not long prior to he died, he returned to his precious West Point. In an address there, he reminisced on his life and work by saying this: “The shadows are lengthening for me. In the night of my memory, constantly I come back to West Point.
Today marks my final roll call with you, but I desire you to know that when I cross the river my last conscious thoughts will be of The Corps, and The Corps, and The Corps. I bid you goodbye.” He passed away on April 5, 1964, from biliary cirrhosis, and his wife remained a widow for well over 30 years before her death at the age of 101.
