5 Tips for Your Family’s Summer Reunion

When summer rolls around, it’s a great time to get out and have fun with the people you love the most. Spending time together, making memories, and having time to visit, catch up, and laugh is always a plus. But. Before you can even leave the house, there’s a lot of preparation that has to come together beforehand, especially if you have a family and you’re trying to get the kids ready, too. So here are our 5 Tips for Your Family’s Summer Reunion.

If that’s the case, you often can’t even enjoy yourself until all the prep is behind you and you’re on the road. And if you’re the one in charge of planning the whole shindig, you’re trying to take a lot of things into consideration so that the vacation is a hit for everyone! To help you out, we’ve come up with five simple tips for when you are getting ready for this year’s fun in the sun.

First, take sunblock. Don’t forget this one! (You’ll hate it when you have to pay through the nose for it in a small vacation town later.) Protecting yourself in the sun is important, and gone are the days when you need to spend minutes (that feel like hours) rubbing sunblock lotion on all the kids (and then trying to get the greasy residue off your own fingers!). These days, spray sunblock makes that a moot point, and it’s easier than ever. And another plus? The sunblock sticks (think glue sticks) are awesome for getting faces without getting anything in the eyes! Regardless of the fun on your calendar this summer, pack plenty of sunblock so you can play in the sun as much as you want without getting burned.

Don’t overpack. Especially if you have children, it can sometimes be easy to bring the whole house in the car. In the back of your mind, you might be worried that if you leave this or that item at home, you’re going to wind up needing it for sure. So, what happens? You pack tons of shirts and shorts, some long pants in case it gets cool, a sweatshirt, medicine, extra diapers, and on and on and on, trying to ensure that you’re prepared for whatever reality. But, here’s the thing. In our experience, we usually end up packing way too much, and it’s largely unnecessary. (Particularly if the family is headed to one vacation spot for an entire week, you can always wash clothes and wear them again if need be, and there’s usually a store in town where you could go get some Motrin if the baby starts teething.) Keeping it simple by streamlining makes it easy to get ready for the week and a cinch to throw everything back in the car when it’s time to head home.

Being in the heat often saps your energy and makes you hungry for something salty! If you’re headed for a beach vacation or lots of time walking around in the sun, stock up on salty snacks and something cool to quench your thirst. Chips, flavorful crackers, and cold drinks in a cooler are all great to have along. And, inevitably, you’ll have at least one person who wants something sweet, so you might want some Red Vines, too.

When you’re trying to decide where to go, choose a destination that will be a good fit for the entire family. You can’t really enjoy yourself if the kids aren’t entertained. Finding a location where the kids can keep themselves happily busy for hours is essential. If they’re happy, the adults will be able to visit and enjoy themselves, too.

And lastly, as a final tip, make a master packing list. Before you even begin packing, make a master list of everything you need to bring along, and write down even the basic things. Then, when it’s time to pack, you can check off each item as you pack it away. The great thing about this? You know you won’t forget anything. And, when it comes time to leave and head home, you can pull that same list out and check to make sure that you got everything back into the car.
If you do that, you’ll be sure to not forget your glasses at the rental vacation home or your chef knife that you brought along to make sure you’d have a decent kitchen knife when preparing meals.
